Ricky Castillo Leads Puerto Rico Open After Round 1
Castillo Seizes Lead at Grand Reserve Golf Club
Ricky Castillo delivered one of the tournament's most composed performances in the third round of the Puerto Rico Open at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, shooting a bogey-free 4-under 68 in challenging wind conditions to take a one-shot lead into the final round. His total of 12-under 204 placed him alongside England's John Parry heading into Sunday's final pairing. Castillo, who earned his PGA Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour, had previously held final-round opportunities that went unfulfilled, and he acknowledged the importance of converting this chance. "This is the position that all of us have dreamed of and want to be in — a chance to win a golf tournament," he told reporters. "I've been fortunate to have that opportunity a few times and haven't gotten it done, so hopefully we'll do it tomorrow."
The most pivotal shot of Castillo's round came at the par-4 12th hole, where he chipped in for birdie to shift momentum decisively in his favour. He held firm across a difficult closing stretch in difficult conditions to maintain his advantage.
Blades Brown's Eagle Keeps Him in Contention
Eighteen-year-old Blades Brown produced the highlight of the round when he holed a 50-foot eagle putt on the par-5 14th hole, finishing at 3-under 69 to remain firmly in contention. Earlier in the season, Brown had shared the final pairing with world number one Scottie Scheffler at The American Express before fading on Sunday with a 74. "Just having that moment with Scottie and Si Woo and being in the final group is going to help me tomorrow," Brown said. He graduated high school in January and represents a remarkable story of youth in professional golf.
Daly II Thrills Before Late Stumble
John Daly II temporarily shared the lead in his PGA Tour debut after launching a 5-iron onto the green for an eagle on the par-5 12th to reach 10-under. However, a three-putt from 75 feet on the following par 5 cost him a stroke, and a chip past the hole on the 18th followed by a lipped-out 15-foot par putt ended a 46-hole bogey-free stretch. Matti Schmid carded a 68 to remain a single stroke off the pace.
