Major Drug Seizure off Puerto Rico's North Coast

Puerto Rico authorities seized cocaine estimated to be worth $12 million in a significant drug bust off the island's north coast on Monday, in one of the largest narcotics intercepts in Puerto Rican waters in recent years. Police intercepted a 26-foot-long unidentified vessel operating without registration in waters off the municipality of Río Grande. Following a pursuit by law enforcement, three suspects were apprehended and more than 1,800 pounds — approximately 820 kilograms — of cocaine were discovered aboard the boat. Puerto Rico Police stated that federal authorities have assumed jurisdiction over the case.

Puerto Rico as a Drug Transit Point

Puerto Rico occupies a strategically significant position in Caribbean narcotics trafficking routes. As a US territory situated between South America — the primary source of cocaine destined for North American and European markets — and the US mainland, the island has historically served as a transit point for drug smuggling operations. Its extensive coastline, numerous small harbours, and proximity to open ocean make maritime interception challenging for law enforcement agencies.

Federal agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the US Coast Guard, US Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI regularly collaborate with Puerto Rico's law enforcement bodies on narcotics interdiction operations. The island's Joint Interagency Task Force South, based in Key West, Florida, coordinates regional anti-drug efforts across the Caribbean maritime corridor. The seizure off Río Grande reflects the continued operational activity of drug trafficking networks in the region and underlines the importance of sustained interagency maritime law enforcement to intercept narcotics before they reach mainland US markets. Federal prosecutors are expected to bring charges against the three detained suspects in connection with the seizure.
