Food Bank of Puerto Rico Receives Critical Operating Support

The Food Bank of Puerto Rico has received a $20,000 grant under a new support programme designed to strengthen the island's food security infrastructure at a time when economic pressures from near-zero growth projections, Trump administration tariff policies, and rising living costs are placing increasing financial stress on Puerto Rican households across all income levels. The Food Bank, officially known as Banco de Alimentos de Puerto Rico, serves as one of the most critical safety-net organisations in Puerto Rican civil society, distributing millions of pounds of food annually through a network of partner organisations, community pantries, senior feeding programmes, and direct service initiatives.

Food Insecurity in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico faces structural food security challenges that go beyond cyclical economic conditions. The island imports approximately 85% of its food supply — one of the highest import dependency ratios of any populated territory in the world — making it acutely vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions, shipping cost increases, and commodity price fluctuations. This vulnerability was starkly demonstrated in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in September 2017, when the destruction of port infrastructure, roads, and distribution networks created a humanitarian food emergency that required massive federal and non-governmental intervention to address. The island's food import dependency also means that Trump administration tariff measures affecting agricultural goods imported from major food-producing countries translate directly into higher grocery prices for Puerto Rican households, compounding the financial pressures already posed by elevated electricity costs and stagnant wages.

The Food Bank's Mission and Scale

The Food Bank of Puerto Rico distributed approximately 65 million pounds of food during fiscal year 2024-2025, working through a network of more than 600 partner agencies across all 78 municipalities of the island. During the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic aftermath, the organisation expanded its operations dramatically to meet a surge in need driven by job losses, business closures, and supply chain disruptions. The $20,000 grant supports the organisation's operational capacity at a moment when demand for food assistance remains elevated relative to pre-pandemic baselines.
