PR Governor Honours Fallen Hero Capt. Ariana Linse Savino
First Posthumous Medal in Puerto Rico History
Governor Jenniffer González Colón awarded the Governor's Medal for Valor and Patriotism posthumously to Captain Ariana G. Linse Savino on April 18, 2026, at the National Cemetery in Bayamón, Puerto Rico — the first time in the island's history that this distinguished honour has been conferred posthumously. The ceremony brought together military leaders from Puerto Rico's National Guard, veteran organisations, government officials, and family members of the fallen officer in a solemn tribute to her sacrifice and service.
Captain Ariana Linse Savino
Capt. Linse Savino, 31, was the Chief of Current Operations with the United States Air Force and a pilot assigned to the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, based at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base in Alabama. She was among six US Air Force members who died on March 12, 2026, in a non-combat aircraft accident involving a KC-135 Stratotanker over Iran. She had been posthumously promoted to the rank of Major in January 2026. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Linse Savino represents the deep tradition of Puerto Rican military service to the United States — a tradition that has seen Puerto Ricans serve with distinction in every major US military conflict since World War I.
Words of Tribute and a Community in Mourning
"Today is a sad day; today is a painful day. Today, we lose a daughter, a sister, a friend, a colleague, a Puerto Rican," Governor González Colón said at the ceremony. "A person who gave the ultimate sacrifice that any officer can give: her life, her legacy, and her career." The governor presented the Puerto Rico flag to Linse Savino's family, including her parents Omayra and Darren, her sister Kelaia, and her brother Sergeant Zevin. The medal's inscription honours her as "a daughter of Puerto Rico, distinguished by her extraordinary valor and her unwavering devotion to the service of our Nation." Her death drew an outpouring of grief and immense pride from communities across Puerto Rico and the diaspora.
